Mirror Life

Mirror Life is the term used to represent a form of synthetic biology where organisms are mirror images of the organisms on Earth. This is done through left-handed and right-handed building blocks. For example, DNA is constructed through “right-handed” building blocks and its mirror form would be constructed from“left-handed” building blocks. However, many researchers and groups believe that the risks must be carefully considered before Mirror Life can become a possible application in the future.
There are currently a few potential benefits to mirror life. The basis of the form is to construct a mirror image of all the forms on Earth. Since the organism will be mirrored, it makes them extremely hard to break down or interact with. This is beneficial for therapeutics and medicines as these mirror organisms are highly resistant and unlikely to break down and degrade quickly. Additionally, the usage of mirror DNA and RNA can be especially useful in diagnostics and engineering.
However, there are currently many risks that researchers have posed and warned about. Firstly, due to their highly resistant nature, a mirror organism essentially can become unstoppable. Since nature as it is is not used to dealing with mirror organisms, the mirror organisms can break multiple biological barriers, and pose a huge risk to humans and ecosystems. Additionally, there are many concerns and worries surrounding competition. Mirror organisms break biological limits as we know them, and have the potential to outcompete multiple, if not all, life forms on Earth, leading to catastrophic changes to ecosystems as we know it. Moreover, many researchers mention that even though there are many benefits that mirror organisms can provide us, there are possibilities that this organism can ultimately prove harmful to us and our bodies, making it an dangerous venture.
Currently, there has been some research conducted around creating mirror organisms. Even though some mirror molecules have been made, further studies still need to be conducted. Many researchers have said that continuing this work can prove to be hazardous and extremely dangerous to the human race and all life forms on Earth. Even though advancements on mirror organisms are expected in the next few decades as of now, debates around the research and the safe and ethical use of these mirror organisms continue to occur in the scientific field.
