MXenes

MXenes are a type of 2D material that have started gaining a lot of attention recently. This is due to the fact that they have many unique properties. These properties include high electrical conductivity, huge surface area, and extreme flexibility. MXenes are 2D sheets composed of multiple metal carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides. The general formula of MXenes is Mn+1XnTx. ‘M’ is a transition metal and ‘X’ is carbon or nitrogen.

One main property that XMenes have is electrical conductivity. These are beneficial for products like electrodes and sensors. Additionally, since they have a large surface area, they help with products like batteries. Due to their high mechanical flexibility, there can be an increase in flexible wearables to improve ease and customer experience. Furthermore, the properties that they have can be changed if the surface chemistry of the sheet changes. This can be highly advantageous for many fields as the MXenes can essentially be tuned to best fit the properties and needs for that specific product.

One prominent challenge with MXenes is their stability. Over time, it is easy for MXenes to oxidize. This leads to huge issues with having a lasting product. To counteract this, there research is currently underway to somehow remove or stop the oxidization through antioxidants or utilizing MXenes’ adaptability.
