Electroceuticals

Electroceuticals, otherwise known as bioelectronic medicine, are primarily used to treat diseases by targeting the nervous system and modifying signals. This is a relatively new way of disease treatment in the healthcare industry that provides an alternative to using drugs.
Electroceuticals take the form of a medical device that can be implanted or worn. They stimulate parts of the nervous system to cause or block electric signals. The change in signaling regulates and alters the functions of tissues and organs, such as the heart. Often, electroceuticals will target a specific nerve that is causing problems, affecting that organ directly. In contrast, drugs often have harmful side effects, as they travel in the body through the bloodstream, which electroceuticals avoid.
An example of a common electroceutical is a cochlear implant. They can be surgically implanted in those with loss of hearing to stimulate the auditory nerve. The implants allow for those individuals to hear sounds and speech; they would normally be unable to without the implants. The implants pick up signals, which are transported to the brain through the auditory nerve, and then interpreted as sound. This has helped many with loss of hearing in one or both ears.
Presently, researchers are continuing to understand and create electroceuticals to develop more effective treatments. They hope to improve assessability, safety, and the cost of production while targeting conditions or diseases that may not have a cure yet.
