The Biotechnology Behind Chocolate

Every Halloween, kids parade the streets in spooky costumes, going from house to house in search of delicious candy. Undoubtedly, candy is the source of Halloween’s appeal and the main event that kids from all over look forward to. But what if we told you that the world’s cacao supply—and importantly, chocolate —could vanish by as early as 2030? Recently, a unique candy bar, made by Ethos Chocolate, has been introduced to the world and intends to change the entire dynamic of chocolate consumption.

Have you ever thought about how crucial role cacao plants play in the process of making chocolate? As a result of our tremendous consumption of chocolate, cacao plants are being pushed to extinction. Just imagine what would happen to people’s lives without the form of sugar they love.

This is where GMO farming comes into play—and it’s the solution that will satisfy generations of chocolate lovers. A major component of Ethos Chocolate’s manufacturing process is that they use GMOs (genetically modified organisms) when making chocolate. All of their chocolate is made from sustainably grown GMO cacao. However, because of widespread misinformation, GMO farming often gets a bad reputation. Below are some benefits of GMO farming that the public should understand:

  • Increased agriculture productivity

  • Insect resistance

  • Higher nutrition and vitamin content

  • Enhanced soil quality

  • Elimination of chemical pesticides

  • Enhanced air quality

  • Conserved water

  • This is a long-term benefit essential for fighting food crises.

Ethos Chocolate has four varieties of chocolates, each demonstrating a way that biotechnology has tackled a real-world food crisis. “The Optimist” aims to educate us about the role of genetic engineering in protecting cacao trees in the Dominican Republic. “The Survivor” shows that GMOs saved the entire papaya industry in Hawaii after the papaya ring spot virus outbreak. “The Hero” was created after GMO researchers helped Floridian orange trees fight citrus greening disease. And finally, “The Trendsetter” tells the story of the GMO farming that made non-browning apples, which cut food waste worldwide.

Through the use of GMOs, Ethos Chocolate is changing the industry of chocolate making as well as food sustainability at large. Both tasty and educational, this is bound to be a public favorite.
